New GeoCentre in Tumbler UNESCO Global Geopark

A new GeoCentre has opened in the Tumbler Ridge UNESCO Global Geopark, creating a new interactive space where visitors and residents can explore the region’s globally significant geology, fossils, landscapes, and natural history. The GeoCentre’s new exhibit, Down to Earth, shares the story of the region through geology, geography, biology, and climate, while helping visitors better understand the significance of the UNESCO Global Geopark designation and the surrounding tourism experiences found throughout the region.

Accessibility and sustainability were key considerations throughout the project. The exhibit was designed using the Canadian Museum for Human Rights’ Exhibit Design Standards for Access and Inclusivity to help ensure visitors of all abilities can comfortably experience the space. Approximately 30 per cent of the visual displays were also created using leftover construction materials, including PVC pipes, concrete, tiles, plywood off-cuts, boards, and foam insulation.

The project was funded through support from the Province of BC’s COVID Economic Recovery Infrastructure Program (CERIP), Northern Development Initiative Trust, the Tumbler Ridge Community Forest, the South Peace Mackenzie Trust, and in-kind contributions from the District of Tumbler Ridge.
